The Faculty Compensation Survey is conducted annually by the American Association of University Professors. It is the largest independent source of data on both full-time and part-time faculty salaries and benefits. The survey is open to both two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States. The study compiles data on more than 380,000 full-time faculty members at nearly 1,000 colleges and universities, as well as more than 100,000 part-time faculty members, representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

The survey collects the following data from institutions:

  • full-time faculty salaries disaggregated by gender, tenure status, contract length, and faculty rank -- professor, associate, assistant, instructor, lecturer, and faculty without a rank.
  • retirement, total health insurance premiums, and dependent tuition benefits.
  • the pay for senior administrators.
  • the pay for part-time faculty members who are paid on a per course section basis.
  • full-time continuing faculty salaries disaggregated by contract length and faculty rank.
